Varsity Basketball

By Camille Taylor

Varsity basketball is an activity that we have during the second trimester. We play basketball games and our first one is after Christmas break.

During practice on Thursday we met up with JV basketball and we started off with running five laps. We couldn’t cut the corners and if we did the coach would make us run another five laps! After we ran our laps we did suicides, which are a special exercise when you run back and forth on a court a certain way and you have to touch the lines on the court. It hurts so much it feels like you are killing yourself, so that’s why it’s called a suicide.

After we did suicides, we got into a group of four and picked a basketball hoop to shoot at and we had to try to make 20 shots as a group. We did this twice then the second time we did it we had to tell how many shots we made. Three groups had four shots, so all the groups that had four shots stood against the wall. The teams against the wall had to pick one of the two teams, that didn’t have four shots, to be on. Only one person went on the other team and the rest of us stayed on our team. The two teams had to get as many as they could in one minute. When the one minute was over the team with lots of people on it lost so we had to run across the gym twice and we couldn’t sit down after we ran because it was bad for our bodies. After the losing team ran, we lined up against the wall and got into teams and played Knockout. The last three that were still in the game on both teams competed against each other until someone won on a team. Once someone won the game we got on the same teams we were on from before and played scrimmage basketball.

Scrimmage basketball is when you are on the same team but you have to play against your team for practice. You have to put a t-shirt on and you have to have a different color on each side so every player can identify which team they are on. There are an even amount of players so we can split into two parts, for example, if there are ten people then five people would go from each team. Then when the coach said “switch” the other five that were waiting would go out from each team and play and when those five were done we would see how many points each team got altogether and every shot we made counted as one and which ever team had the most points won.

After we played scrimmage basketball, the team that won was the team with the red side and the team with the white side lost. After we played and heard the score the next thing we did was dribble exercise. We had to run up and down the gym in the dribbling position. First we have to run up and down the gym dribbling with our right hand then again with our left hand. We had to run up and down the court like we did suicides. After every group was finished we played Knock Out until only one person was left. And whenever someone got out they had to pick two basketballs up and put them away then go down stairs and get ready to leave or go to Evening Study to do homework.
