Sole Train

By Jadyn Baptista

Sole Train is a running program, for kids and adults. At M.C.A one of our activities are running and I am in it. One of our coach’s names is Jess and she said that she was one out of a lot of people who started the program. In May we are having our first race and we have been prating hard. In sole train you run around the neighborhood and you get to talk to your friends and have fun. Sole train helps you stay healthy, be in shape and to never give up and keep on going. They push you to do well in a good way though. I personally love Sole Train because I get to be with my friends and hang out with my coaches it is a lot of fun. On Thursday March 15, we made T-shirts for Sole Train with girls from Cross Country running group and they helped with our shorts. They say on top MCA then SOLE TRAIN then 2012. We are working on the back. Anyway Sole Train is lots of fun and of you are into running I think you should check it out and see if you like it.

Spring

By Chrisann Walker

Spring,

An amazing season

Flowers bloom,

Dandelions, roses, and tulips

The months are blissful,

March, April, May, and June

Day and nights are cool,

Gorgeous sunsets,

Blue skies at night

Spring,

A wonderful season

No dark clouds,

Loving people,

Hugs going around

Warm weather,

Fresh smell in the air

Trees get leaves,

The season of spring,

For our mother,

Valentines at MCA

By Rianna Cadogan

You know those days you get candy from your valentine or you just hang out with a friend. Well not our valentine’s day this year (2-14-12). We are going to have an “Ice cream social.” An “Ice cream social” is where we can make our own sundae with as much toppings as we want! There will be a variety of many toppings and ice cream. Our day I think is going to be pretty much awesome. These are some results of what students at MCA would think:

A fifth grader K.G said- she thinks it is going to be fun, tasty and really social. After the social she thought this she thought it was worth two thumbs up.

My thoughts- I think it was really fun it was just like lunch except with ice cream with a lot of toppings except we did not have all the good ones though. We had chocolate, vanilla and fudge swirl ice cream. We had hot fudge, M&M’s, Hershey kisses, caramel sauce and Oreo cookies.

A fifth grader N.O- she thought it was going to be boring but it turned out pretty good. The way it sounded had been boring but when it happened it got better then she expected even I expected it to be boring.

That is the Valentine’s at MCA I hope yours was fun and sweet as mine.

MCA's Science Fair 2012

By Hunessa Louis

Do you love science? If yes, then guess what’s coming up? The Mother Caroline Academy 2012 Science Fair! Here at MCA every year we have a science fair for all the grades fifth through eighth grade. A science fair is usually and generally a competition where students or contestants show and present their science project in the form of an experiment, report, or a display.

Every grade has a different topic. 5th grade is focusing on many different topics not just one, 6th grade is focusing on natural disasters, 7th grade is focusing on biology as their class topic, and 8th grade is focusing on chemistry as their class topic. Our deadline is on March 21, 2012 which is also the day of the actual science fair. We’ve been working very hard for everything with research and we’re very excited for this occasion.

On March 21, 2012 at 2:20 is when the entire event will start. Judges will be there to judge our projects, parents will be there, teachers, and the students/ participants will be attending this event. When there, the students have to explain what their topic is and how they did it. They have to explain their topic, why they chose the topic, and they have to end the presentation. There is a process to the science fair. First you have to choose a topic. Then you have to answer some questions that are asked by the teacher such as: “What do you know about this topic?” or “Why did you choose this topic?” After that, you have to make a plan letter to your teacher and see if your project is an experiment or survey etc. You also have to make a logbook having all your research about the topic and your sources and so much more like listing your materials. Then your teacher will have these check-ins with you and she can let and accept you to do your project on your own.

As I said, there are many different topics and projects. For example, Nicole and Christine are doing Triboluminescence With Candy, Chrisann is Making Borax Crystals, I’m doing How is the Stomach Protected from the Stomach Acid, but not the skin?, and Jadyn is doing a Timing Belt.

I’m sure all the projects are going to surprise you very much, but we can’t tell you because you have to wait and see yourself. You’re the judge of this Science Fair.

Good Luck Everyone!

St. Patrick's Day

By Amauna Christmas

They say that St. Patrick’s Day is a lucky day! I agree and it is, many dreams come true on that day. Many Irish people celebrate that special day to them. Sister Katherine is Irish and it’s a special day to her. She seems to love to celebrate the holiday of her culture. She tells us about who invented it, when, where, and more things. If you would like to know a lot about St. Patrick’s Day you could ask her. Many people even celebrate that even if they are not Irish. Many people are thankful for the holiday of St. Patrick’s Day!

St. Patrick’s Day is this month (March 17, 2012) I’m excited! I want to talk to Sister Katherine about St. Patrick’s Day, I bet she is excited. That day will be amazing and a lucky day for everyone.

St. Patrick’s Day may not be special to you, if it is great, but it’s important to people who are Irish.

Support Ms. Ellis!

By Anicia DePina

My teacher, Ms. Ellis, is going to run the Boston Marathon to raise money for our school, Mother Caroline Academy. The students of MCA have been making Valentines Day cards to send to people so they can donate money. If you want to donate money that would be very helpful and we would really appreciate it. You should support Ms. Ellis because she is a generous person and if it was you I have no doubt that she will support you.

Ms. Ellis is also very energetic and she cares about everyone. She is like your best friend when you need one. She is your teacher when you need one. She is even your mother when you really need one.

The Super Bowl

By Amauna Christmas

So this fantastic game is to the PATRIOT fans. Apparently they lost, I was mad and they lost again to the GIANTS. I bet Tom Brady was really mad. The score was 17-21, Pats had 17 Giants had 21. They had a lucky point to catch up during the game. Aaron Hernandez put in some work that game. Tom Brady put in some work by his throws, and maybe next time they may get to the super bowl again. Also they worked hard, so did the Giants. Eli Manning had some good throws he did the work that was put in. We have some flaws, but we still went to the super bowl. The last throw of the game was very impressive if one teammate would’ve caught that that would’ve made history. I think Tom Brady is the best quarterback in the U.S.A. He has made history that no one can make. He may become the best quarterback alive. He has many talents, I hope his son may become a football player. He inspires me to play football, the whole team does.

That’s what happened at the super bowl.

School Ranter

By Genesis Pimentel

I’m here to talk about the Dominican Republic. I know you girls may think why I’m talking about it. Well this is why: The Dominican Republic has been having continuous earthquakes. And of course, when the first earthquake hit, people liked it, they were actually having fun, yes, they’re weird. But this is serious; these continuous earthquakes are happening because D.R isn’t made on firm land, it’s supported by rocks or something. And each time one falls off an earthquake happens. This isn’t something we can stop and because this is so serious people are sending their kids to school with whistle. If the last of the rocks or whatever falls the Dominican Republic will fall to the ocean and it’ll be like the lost city of Atlantis. I just hope that that’s not the case.

Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum

Thursday, January 19 2012 was the opening of the new wing of the museum. Mayor Menino was there and he gave a great speech and some of the girls in my class got to shake his hand. The museum is a great deal to my school and the city of Boston because it is a beautiful work of art created by a beautiful woman and it deserves to be celebrated. My school Mother Caroline Academy has a partnership with the museum where my class the fifth grade goes to the museum and creates beautiful works of art. We go to the museum once a month on Fridays. The museum is at 280, the Fenway, Boston, MA 02115. Also the new entrance is on Evans Way.
By: Anicia

My experience at the Gardner museum was spectacular. The art was fantastic and I was amazed. The food was delicious. The art was also inspiring and the birds were beautiful. We got to see pictures of Isabella and her husband. We also got to see the fire places and some of her writings. At the end when we were all in the frigid cold we saw birds j walking and it was funny.
By: Chris- Ann

My experience at The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum was nice. I was offered foods and drinks. I got to meet new people. I saw the mayor and didn’t get to shake his hand sadly. The part that I liked the most was the food and the art project that we were able to do using coffee. The point of the art project was to place drops of coffee on a piece of paper then move it around until I saw an image. I didn’t really like the trip all that much because we didn’t really do anything fun. At least I got to go but, than that It was pretty good to go and observe all the artwork and furniture that was in the building that Isabella and her workers had built.
By:Kamille

What I saw was beautiful. When I saw those pictures I realized what art is. If you want to be an artist you must see that museum. That was one of the BEST museums I’ve ever seen in my life. I was amazed about the way she organized it. So if I ever become an artist I may just go there, and draw what I see. I love that museum and, they serve mini pancakes, sugary donuts, and an egg. I bet when we go there again I would love to draw pictures about what I see. Also next time maybe you can come to see the wonderland of art.
By: Amauna

My class and I went to the opening of the new building at the Isabella Gardner Museum. Mayor Menino was there and many different news stations (like Fox 25 news, 7 News etc.) were also there and some of the artists that have their art work in the museum was there. It was beautiful and new it smelled fresh, there was a living room/ library and there were two adorable birds. We also went to the old part of the museum it was ancient and beautiful but you couldn’t touch anything because they were all old and might break. Isabella also left some pages out of her journal or things like pictures of her or other people she might’ve known. There were lots of hidden pictures behind curtains (I thought it was pretty cool). I really enjoy the Isabella Gardner Museum and I wish I could go back there again.

Black History Month

By Amauna Christmas

Black history month is when the month February comes, and we celebrate the important people. This has existed since 1926 annually. It is in February, because things that were important mostly happened in February. Our fellow African Americans are represented in this month February, and we celebrate that for them. Also the remembrance of our black people who are important to us this moment, this day, and this month. Our nation would not have been the same without our people that changed it. They took their time to change something that had to be changed. Like MLK he had changed the world, he made us all equal. He proved to everyone that we are all equal. Many people had made history this month, we haven’t realized that. Without the change that people made, it would’ve been like the past. Soon enough we will realize, and then thank them. We’ll make the relationship of black history month for everyone, we can spread the word. Words are so powerful, our fellow African Americans proved that. That’s how they got that way, the successful way. And next thing you know, you’ll be doing the same thing, as they were doing.

School Ranter

By Genesis Pimentel

Everyone knows the school science fair is coming up on March 21st, 2012! That’s about six weeks away, do the math. Anyway, all grades are working hard to do their best on their project. In the 5th grade class, each person, or pair, is doing a wide variety of projects from a project about the sun exploding in 2015 to a psychological one about color and light affect human behavior. The sixth grade, from what I’ve heard, is doing projects about natural disasters. And Ms. Perrault, the science teacher says they are all over making volcanoes, one particular student, Janea, is making a tsunami, which is pretty exciting. I’ve heard that the seventh grade is doing biology but I’m not so sure. I do know that the 8th grade is doing chemistry, and she told us a little secret that got us excited and motivated for the science fair. Can’t wait to see you guys there!

Teacher Fashion

By Chrisann Walker

There are many teachers here at MCA but here are some ways that some of the teachers dress. There are twelve teachers and two co-principals and none of them dress alike. they all dress in their individual ways!!!!!!!

Miss Z likes to wear skirts and sometimes she wears pants. She likes wearing dark color or neutral colors. Miss Z also likes wearing flats, sweaters, and tights. Recently she has been wearing long sleeve shirts that her mom knitted.

Miss Sitron likes wearing khakis and sleeveless shirts, and also dress pants and a sweater. She also wears her hair curly or strait.

Miss Bartels likes wearing skirts and dresses with tights that are bright colored or have interesting patterns. Also in general she likes wearing colorful unusual clothing and jewelry. Her favorite shoes are her cowboy boots. As the students at MCA know she likes wearing CRAZY EARINGS!!!!!!

Miss Edelman likes wearing short sleeve shirts, cardigan sweaters, flat shoes, and dress pants. Sometimes she wears her hair up or down.

Miss P likes wearing jeans on Fridays, comfy short sleeve shirts with a sweater and boots in the winter. She wears her glasses on top of her head most of the time.

Miss McGrath likes to wear dress shirts and skirts with flats. She has a pair of pretty HOT PINK high heel shoes.

Miss Brown likes wearing slacks, knit tops, blouses, with scarfs. She usually wears pumps with a little heel and solid colors. She said that solid colors make it easier for her to pick out clothes to wear. Miss Brown does not usually wear sweaters but prefers wearing vests. Her jewelry is a watch, earrings, necklaces, and a bracelet that she made herself.

Ms. Soules likes wearing skirts and fun tights. She likes wearing purple but usually wears black or gray. She never wears contacts and always wears glasses. Ms. Soules wears sweaters a lot and usually wears her white pearl earring. She is more casually dressed when she is not teaching. Lastly she wears flat shoes inside and out of school.

Ms.Taylor likes wearing dress pants, flat shoes, never wars contacts. Her only jewelry that she wears to school is earrings. So basically her general clothing is comfortable.

Sister Katherine likes wearing her Franciscan Cross and her glasses.

2nd Anniversary Since the Haiti Earthquake

By Hunessa Louis

On January 12, 2010 at 4:45, a 7.0 earthquake striked Haiti. About 300,000 people died and 1.5 million people were injured or hurt. Many people were buried under the rubble for days and some of them survived but some didn’t. Kids lost their parents which turned them into orphans and they all stayed together in one tent or know as an orphanage. Many people were and are missing but some of them were found which is great. Through all this Haiti never lost its faith even though they lost all these things. Haitian are known for all their and everyone here in America helped also which we are very thankful that we have neighbors from another country willing to help us. It’s been two years since the Haiti earthquake on January 12, 2010 and it’s important to remember that huge catastrophe because it was a huge sad day to remember the missing, the dead, the found, the alive, the orphans, the injured, and the victims.

The Victory of the Basketball Game

By Amauna Christmas

So on Thursday, we, the basketball team, won against Derby. To me it was challenging, because they were really tall. Other than that we won, and tried our best. When you try your best, you may get through. Also what we did good in rebounds, and not so much in zones. But hey we won, you have to give us our props. Christina did really well, and she made really good passes. If you weren’t there next time you should come to our next game. I really can’t believe that we won. We also did good on shooting. The score was 22-9, we had 22 and Derby had 9. Well just remember that when you want to come to cheer on, you're always welcome.

Science Inventions

By Christine Tran

In my class, science, we are writing about inventions that famous people made. My choice was the first TV because I like watching TV and I wanted to know how they can put shows on it and watch. It’s pretty cool that you can watch shows on it. The inventor that invented the TV was Philo Farnsworth. He made the screen to watch shows. If it wasn’t for him we wouldn’t have a TV, we wouldn’t watch shows, and people will get bored if we don’t watch anything. All my other classmates got inventions like computer, laptop, etc. It takes a lot of research to look up information about the inventions we’re doing and there are a lot of questions that we have to answer. It’s kind of hard to do the science inventions because I don’t know anything about the TV, so now I’m learning about a TV so that I can know a lot of things about it!!

Everyone else in my class doesn’t know anything about TVs, computers, and more inventions that we even don’t know about. We are doing this project because we can know better about what inventions we’re doing and that we were watching a video about inventions that fail and we want to do what inventions didn’t fail, so we are sticking on inventions and doing inventions. More about the TV is that Philo Farnsworth invented the first TV that actually works!!! It’s a miracle that it works so that we can watch shows and movies, but now there’s a new TV that’s bigger and not the old kinds. Now that they don’t use old TVs a lot now Philo’s invention is gone because no one use those kinds of TVs anymore, but some people use them, but not as much as the new kind of TVs.

Back to our science inventions is that now we finish our science inventions and hang it on our classroom on the billboard. I wish we could do more about inventions, but I think we’re still doing a few more things about inventions. It’s a really good project to do to know more which is better than knowing less. I also hope everyone else enjoys learning about inventions; well I do because it’s so interesting. I wonder what were going to learn next in science for our topic inventions, maybe something more interesting, I hope. I think that’s it about science inventions, but there will be more when I have science again. Someday you can invent something to be like the others famous inventors!!!!

A Day in the Life of Ms. Bartels

By Jadyn Baptista

What is it like to be an art teacher?

It involves a lot of cleaning up, and organizing supplies. But, I get to play with colors, use her artistic brain, and work one on one with students on creative projects.

Is this your first or second year at M.C.A?

2nd year at M.C.A but, 1st year as art teacher.

What’s you favorite thing to do on the weekends?

It's What I Think (Genesis's Column)

By Genesis Pimentel

I think that there should be an intercom in each room. I mean, I know the school is small, but it’ll save more time because, for example, when a parent comes, Ms. Beverly won’t have to come all the way up to tell you that your parent is there. It’s definitely more efficient. It saves so much time for me, I’m a rather lazy person and instead of going out of the room to go tell a teacher something, I can locate them through the intercom and only the teacher and the people in the room with her will be able to hear the news of the situation. You can’t disagree this isn’t a smart idea; saves everyone time and makes things look fancier. Like I said before, you can’t disagree. Imagine a world with intercoms and now that you have, consider buying intercoms.

Ms. Edelman's Interview

By Amauna Christmas

How hard it is to be a teacher?

It’s really hard, but enjoyable!

How do you know what to teach?

“We learn it in college and we follow the curriculum”.

How do you remember to make it to class on time?

You hear the noise of the children, or you wear a watch.

When do you plan on printing the worksheets (at night time)?

She usually makes her photocopies in the morning, before homeroom.

How do you control your anger if you are mad at the students?

She never gets mad at the students. If she does she tries to remember that we’re students.

When do you know when it’s time to give out demerits?

When students don’t do what they’re not suppose to do.

How do you know how to choose worksheets?

She looks for the ones that match up what we’re learning.

How do you know to make it a class assignment or homework?

She likes to do class work if they need extra help.

How do you get along with other teachers?

Varsity Basketball

By Camille Taylor

Varsity basketball is an activity that we have during the second trimester. We play basketball games and our first one is after Christmas break.

During practice on Thursday we met up with JV basketball and we started off with running five laps. We couldn’t cut the corners and if we did the coach would make us run another five laps! After we ran our laps we did suicides, which are a special exercise when you run back and forth on a court a certain way and you have to touch the lines on the court. It hurts so much it feels like you are killing yourself, so that’s why it’s called a suicide.

After we did suicides, we got into a group of four and picked a basketball hoop to shoot at and we had to try to make 20 shots as a group. We did this twice then the second time we did it we had to tell how many shots we made. Three groups had four shots, so all the groups that had four shots stood against the wall. The teams against the wall had to pick one of the two teams, that didn’t have four shots, to be on. Only one person went on the other team and the rest of us stayed on our team. The two teams had to get as many as they could in one minute. When the one minute was over the team with lots of people on it lost so we had to run across the gym twice and we couldn’t sit down after we ran because it was bad for our bodies. After the losing team ran, we lined up against the wall and got into teams and played Knockout. The last three that were still in the game on both teams competed against each other until someone won on a team. Once someone won the game we got on the same teams we were on from before and played scrimmage basketball.

Scrimmage basketball is when you are on the same team but you have to play against your team for practice. You have to put a t-shirt on and you have to have a different color on each side so every player can identify which team they are on. There are an even amount of players so we can split into two parts, for example, if there are ten people then five people would go from each team. Then when the coach said “switch” the other five that were waiting would go out from each team and play and when those five were done we would see how many points each team got altogether and every shot we made counted as one and which ever team had the most points won.

After we played scrimmage basketball, the team that won was the team with the red side and the team with the white side lost. After we played and heard the score the next thing we did was dribble exercise. We had to run up and down the gym in the dribbling position. First we have to run up and down the gym dribbling with our right hand then again with our left hand. We had to run up and down the court like we did suicides. After every group was finished we played Knock Out until only one person was left. And whenever someone got out they had to pick two basketballs up and put them away then go down stairs and get ready to leave or go to Evening Study to do homework.
