Special Events

Literary Lights
By Janaiya

Literary Lights is the time when kids all over Boston present authors with a special speech at the Boston Public Library. It is very hard to present an author for Literary Lights. This event only happens once a year. Each kid that gets picked writes a speech for the person they are presenting. Well just to let you know, one of our 8th graders was picked for Literary Lights…. Her name is Rachel Kalombo. As a MCA student I am very proud to present her, because she did an amazing job at Literary Lights.

Rachel got picked by Ms.Stechmann. I would like to give a big thanks to Ms.Stechmann, for picking one of our students from MCA to present. Rachel really didn’t expect it she was very happy to get picked. Rachel thought it was not hard making her speech. She said because it was based on the author’s book it was not that hard. Rachel thinks the authors’ books are very interesting, because her books are mostly about girls as heroes. Rachel’s author was Karen Hesse. She thought Karen was nice. Karen even gave Rachel a gift. She gave her a journal with a poem in it called Rachel. The ceremony turned out to be nice. All the presenters did a good job. And Rachel did a very good job representing at the Literary Lights. It turned out to be very professional.

Well that’s all today; see you next time with more special events. This is your reporter Janaiya Green on Events/Special occasions. See you next time :^)!

Texting While Driving

Athena

Recently Massachusetts has passed a no texting while driving law. Texting and driving has resulted in multiple and countless accidents. A survey was conducted in the United States among sixteen to seventeen year old drivers by the Automobile Association of America. Of young people surveyed, and about 45% admitted to the fact that they text while driving.

The biggest distraction for teenagers while they are driving is texting. More than 330,000 people of all ages are injured in cell phone related accidents. Approximately 2,000 deaths were due to cell phone distractions.

Texting became the new distraction for driving since the no talking on the phone rule. This rule is enforced to have young people aware of the dangers of this action. Teenagers are said to text throughout the day and they bring this habit behind the wheel. If you’re lucky, then all you would get is a ticket and a slap on the wrist, but if you are not so fortunate than your parents will be attending your funeral instead of your graduation. So if you ever see one of your relatives or friends talking or texting while driving make sure to stop them because that may be all it takes to save a life.

Books made into Movies

Desiree

Hi it’s Dez and I’m going to tell you about how movies are made into books and how books are made into movies. So most likely the books were made into movies, but sometimes it’s the other way around. Anyway, the movie is often just like the book but they still have some differences and that’s what I’m going to tell you in this article.

I’m going to use Twilight as an example. Some similarities are that the book and movie both have the plot and same characters and same setting. Some differences are that the books longer than the movie, which means the book is more descriptive and the movie is just enough description to get the main point out and to make you understand. That’s why some people say they like the book better than the movie.

Have you ever been disappointed by the way a movie that was based on a book came out? Why didn’t you like the movie?

Caught Ya!

Yazmily

Every week, I will be looking for students who do good deeds, and try and catch them in the act!
Here are my observations from this week:

I saw Rachel Tejeda help out some friends with their homeroom job when she had to

do her own job.

When I was upstairs, I saw Desiree helping out a friend when they needed help putting away things.

One day when I was walking to my class I saw this girl in the 6th grade and she was helping out a classmate when her stuff fell out her folder and there was a bunch of people that helped her with all the stuff that fell.

When I was outside one of the 7th graders fell and then this other 7th grader helped her off the ground and I thought that was nice because I thought it is kind to help out someone that is in your class.

Keep those good deeds coming, and look for your name in this article!
