2nd Anniversary Since the Haiti Earthquake

By Hunessa Louis

On January 12, 2010 at 4:45, a 7.0 earthquake striked Haiti. About 300,000 people died and 1.5 million people were injured or hurt. Many people were buried under the rubble for days and some of them survived but some didn’t. Kids lost their parents which turned them into orphans and they all stayed together in one tent or know as an orphanage. Many people were and are missing but some of them were found which is great. Through all this Haiti never lost its faith even though they lost all these things. Haitian are known for all their and everyone here in America helped also which we are very thankful that we have neighbors from another country willing to help us. It’s been two years since the Haiti earthquake on January 12, 2010 and it’s important to remember that huge catastrophe because it was a huge sad day to remember the missing, the dead, the found, the alive, the orphans, the injured, and the victims.

The Victory of the Basketball Game

By Amauna Christmas

So on Thursday, we, the basketball team, won against Derby. To me it was challenging, because they were really tall. Other than that we won, and tried our best. When you try your best, you may get through. Also what we did good in rebounds, and not so much in zones. But hey we won, you have to give us our props. Christina did really well, and she made really good passes. If you weren’t there next time you should come to our next game. I really can’t believe that we won. We also did good on shooting. The score was 22-9, we had 22 and Derby had 9. Well just remember that when you want to come to cheer on, you're always welcome.

Science Inventions

By Christine Tran

In my class, science, we are writing about inventions that famous people made. My choice was the first TV because I like watching TV and I wanted to know how they can put shows on it and watch. It’s pretty cool that you can watch shows on it. The inventor that invented the TV was Philo Farnsworth. He made the screen to watch shows. If it wasn’t for him we wouldn’t have a TV, we wouldn’t watch shows, and people will get bored if we don’t watch anything. All my other classmates got inventions like computer, laptop, etc. It takes a lot of research to look up information about the inventions we’re doing and there are a lot of questions that we have to answer. It’s kind of hard to do the science inventions because I don’t know anything about the TV, so now I’m learning about a TV so that I can know a lot of things about it!!

Everyone else in my class doesn’t know anything about TVs, computers, and more inventions that we even don’t know about. We are doing this project because we can know better about what inventions we’re doing and that we were watching a video about inventions that fail and we want to do what inventions didn’t fail, so we are sticking on inventions and doing inventions. More about the TV is that Philo Farnsworth invented the first TV that actually works!!! It’s a miracle that it works so that we can watch shows and movies, but now there’s a new TV that’s bigger and not the old kinds. Now that they don’t use old TVs a lot now Philo’s invention is gone because no one use those kinds of TVs anymore, but some people use them, but not as much as the new kind of TVs.

Back to our science inventions is that now we finish our science inventions and hang it on our classroom on the billboard. I wish we could do more about inventions, but I think we’re still doing a few more things about inventions. It’s a really good project to do to know more which is better than knowing less. I also hope everyone else enjoys learning about inventions; well I do because it’s so interesting. I wonder what were going to learn next in science for our topic inventions, maybe something more interesting, I hope. I think that’s it about science inventions, but there will be more when I have science again. Someday you can invent something to be like the others famous inventors!!!!

A Day in the Life of Ms. Bartels

By Jadyn Baptista

What is it like to be an art teacher?

It involves a lot of cleaning up, and organizing supplies. But, I get to play with colors, use her artistic brain, and work one on one with students on creative projects.

It's What I Think (Genesis's Column)

By Genesis Pimentel

I think that there should be an intercom in each room. I mean, I know the school is small, but it’ll save more time because, for example, when a parent comes, Ms. Beverly won’t have to come all the way up to tell you that your parent is there. It’s definitely more efficient. It saves so much time for me, I’m a rather lazy person and instead of going out of the room to go tell a teacher something, I can locate them through the intercom and only the teacher and the people in the room with her will be able to hear the news of the situation. You can’t disagree this isn’t a smart idea; saves everyone time and makes things look fancier. Like I said before, you can’t disagree. Imagine a world with intercoms and now that you have, consider buying intercoms.

Varsity Basketball

By Camille Taylor

Varsity basketball is an activity that we have during the second trimester. We play basketball games and our first one is after Christmas break.

During practice on Thursday we met up with JV basketball and we started off with running five laps. We couldn’t cut the corners and if we did the coach would make us run another five laps! After we ran our laps we did suicides, which are a special exercise when you run back and forth on a court a certain way and you have to touch the lines on the court. It hurts so much it feels like you are killing yourself, so that’s why it’s called a suicide.

After we did suicides, we got into a group of four and picked a basketball hoop to shoot at and we had to try to make 20 shots as a group. We did this twice then the second time we did it we had to tell how many shots we made. Three groups had four shots, so all the groups that had four shots stood against the wall. The teams against the wall had to pick one of the two teams, that didn’t have four shots, to be on. Only one person went on the other team and the rest of us stayed on our team. The two teams had to get as many as they could in one minute. When the one minute was over the team with lots of people on it lost so we had to run across the gym twice and we couldn’t sit down after we ran because it was bad for our bodies. After the losing team ran, we lined up against the wall and got into teams and played Knockout. The last three that were still in the game on both teams competed against each other until someone won on a team. Once someone won the game we got on the same teams we were on from before and played scrimmage basketball.

Scrimmage basketball is when you are on the same team but you have to play against your team for practice. You have to put a t-shirt on and you have to have a different color on each side so every player can identify which team they are on. There are an even amount of players so we can split into two parts, for example, if there are ten people then five people would go from each team. Then when the coach said “switch” the other five that were waiting would go out from each team and play and when those five were done we would see how many points each team got altogether and every shot we made counted as one and which ever team had the most points won.

After we played scrimmage basketball, the team that won was the team with the red side and the team with the white side lost. After we played and heard the score the next thing we did was dribble exercise. We had to run up and down the gym in the dribbling position. First we have to run up and down the gym dribbling with our right hand then again with our left hand. We had to run up and down the court like we did suicides. After every group was finished we played Knock Out until only one person was left. And whenever someone got out they had to pick two basketballs up and put them away then go down stairs and get ready to leave or go to Evening Study to do homework.

What Art Class is Like

By Jadyn Baptista

At M.C.A art class is so much fun. Some of the projects we have done are: color mixing wheel- we take some colors and mix the to show what color makes what; Color window- we needed to pick a mood and show that mood through a window picture; Profile collage- well you need to draw one side of your self then put pictures from magazines and stick them on like a collage; Ink lines- you get a straw some water paint and a brush, what we did is we put a little paint on our watercolor paper and then blow quickly with the straw and you will see cool lines.

Also we did projects such as: Out of the window sketch- you look out you window and draw what you see the you can decide if you want to paint or color it; Pattern Contrast- it is difficult but, you trace your hand some where on your paper then we had to draw a box around the hand after we divided the paper into 7 sections and drew stuff inside then finally you color it; Pop Art- is you pick a picture and hold it up agents a window with the paper under the picture, then we traced it four times on the paper in a different place, next you want to color each one differently.

However, one of our messiest projects was the marbled paper because you take shaving cream and smear it on paper then put paint on it after you let it dry. Another one we have done is called make your own code it was easy you need to make a key that tells you what letter equals the picture that you write something using the code.

Highest favorite project = Marbled paper

Least favorite project = Make your own code

Mother Caroline Academy

By Anicia DePina

Mother Caroline Academy is a school just for girls. Here at MCA everyone is united and we know each other very well. MCA is located at Blue Hill Avenue which is in Dorchester and Dorchester is in Boston MA. MCA is a very small school with the maximum of 15 students in each grade, 5th through 8th. The president of MCA is Mr. Ed Hudner, the co-principals are Ms. Michelle Albert and Ms. Betty Brown and our registrar is Ms. Karen Ricketts. Here at MCA the teachers, principals, registrar, and president all have big expectations for us girls. The reasons they have big expectations for us is that they really care about our future and that we get into a good high school and college and that our dreams come true. MCA is a school that has high hopes for their students. Ms. Michelle Albert shared one of her hopes with me. This is what she said: “My hopes for you girls is that you be anything you set your mind to and that you all are happy, successful, humble, intelligent and powerful women”.

Interesting Facts

  • Some of the teachers that worked here came to school here
  • This is the school’s 19th year
  • Some of the teachers that work here at MCA also live here, there is an apartment on the 4th floor

Something else is that they are adding a fourth grade to our school. When they add the 4th grade the school will be a little bit bigger. MCA is a school with a lot of projects. One of the projects is Hugs for Heroes. Hugs for Heroes is an organization put together and people, schools or just anyone can donate. The reason why this program was set up was because many of the Marine Corps didn’t get anything on mail day so someone brilliant came up with that idea so our school are always writing cards and mailing them to the Marine Corps. Something really exciting that happened was that Lt. Nick Francona came and talked to us. It was a really big pleasure to meet him and he is just a wonderful person.

The Annual Dinner

By Hunessa Louis

Coming up in May we at MCAEC are going to have an annual dinner at the Copley Hotel in downtown Boston. Every year Mother Caroline Academy has a dinner at a huge beautiful place where we all come together and we have a guest speaker which last year was Zakiya Lewis (Ms Cheryl’s daughter). There were also things auctioned off (which is like things were for sale) and I’m sure that they were made in art. They were also very beautiful. Chairs, small tables, Red Sox Tickets, and student artwork were auctioned off. The students did an amazing entrance with matching clothes and different flags from other countries, just magnificent. By the way there were Shirley Temples but at the time the students had to use tickets (they only had 2) so use them wisely if we do get tickets. (To get back to subject) The ballroom was decorated very nicely and was extremely gorgeous.

I’m going to interview the people who set up and prepare for the annual dinner, Dulce Depina and Ms Julie,

How long before the Annual Dinner do you guys prepare for it?

Miss Julie said that they usually prepare for the dinner at least five months before.

Is it difficult?

Ms Julie and Ms Depina said that it is both fun and difficult because they get to work with the students and learn about the families.

How many people are usually there?

Ms Julie answered that there are usually 300- 400 people there each year.

How do you choose the guest speaker?

They both said that they choose their guest speaker by word of mouth or suggestions or close connections to the school.

If you want to know more about the annual dinner then you’ll just have to experience it and know the fun.

Shining Star

By Christine Tran

Shining Star is a program for kids. If you have brothers, sisters, cousins, or neighbors that are in 3rd or 4th grade you should sign them up in Shining Star. It’s in Mother Caroline Academy, but in the basement and it’s not dirty or messy. Mother Caroline is located at 515 Blue Hill Ave, Dorchester, MA 02121. Remember it’s in the basement. In Shining Star you do your homework and play games.

When you come into Shining Star you have to sign the time you get there, then get a snack and get right to your homework. All the teachers in Shining Star are really, really, really nice especially one. Her name is Ms. Blair. She is the lead teacher in Shining Star. Don’t be mean to the teachers or they won’t like it and they also help you, so there’s no reason to be mean to them. Sometimes for activities she lets you go on the computer, cook, do crossword puzzles, and much more. If you want to know all the activities then sign up for Shining Star.

When Shining Star is almost over you go to a meeting and talk about your day. When it’s Wednesday or Friday you end meeting early and play in the gym. You play games like tag, kickball, and more. Then at 5: 30 you leave and you can tell everyone about the fun day you had in Shining Star. Then come back again!!!!

So sign up and have a fun day at Shining Star!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Truth About New Year's

By Genesis Pimentel

I’m here to talk about New Year’s. I’m not going to talk about how exciting a new year is or the fact that people think that it’s the end of the world. No. I’m here to talk about the truth about New Year’s. It’s not a harsh truth, but don’t expect me to sugar coat it. You probably already know this, but people get really excited about their New Year’s resolutions, but the thing is that some people just get tired of their New Year’s resolution by the end of New Year’s Day. Some get tired by the end of the week and others get tired by February. Either way, only very special and determined people go through with their resolutions until the end of the year. And I’ve also found that the minute after New Year’s pass, the New Year is already old. Now that I think about it, the term New Year should only be allowed to be used the first week of January, unless you get into school anytime later. This is the truth about New Year’s.

Jazzing Up the Uniform

By Laura Lopez

Here at the Mother Caroline Academy we all get the same uniform: blue and red skirt with lines on it as a design and a blue shirt with a logo on it with name of the school. But even though we all have to wear the same thing we all have a little something that makes our style a bit more fashionable. Some students in the 5th grade like to use jewelry such as their bracelets with their names on them. Some don’t wear bracelets; they use a headband with a bow on top and earrings. Some don’t wear earrings (which always have to be small) they only wear headband with a bow on top. Some just wear earrings! Some students wear big bows on their shoes instead of just plain black shoes. In the 6th grade they also use some earrings, necklaces and headbands but not as many bows. The 7th grade uses a lot of earrings mostly, and the 8th grade uses earrings, bracelets, and necklaces. Each grade has their own style of bracelets and headbands that they wear.

SPOTTTED! Cool accessories at Mother Caroline!

Jadyn in the 5th grade wears earrings with colorful feathers: light blue, light green and light pink!

Aniah, also in the 5th grade, wears a black headband with a big blue bow and white polka dots.

Nicole in the 5th grade wears different kinds of earrings. One of them is two small red balls with a bigger third ball underneath.

Hunessa in the 5th grade wears black Uggs with jeans, which makes a nice outfit with the blue uniform shirt on Jeans and Polo Day.

Anicia in the 5th grade wears fake pink nails that look real and fashionable.

Kamille has a fashionable thin hair scrunchy with two red balls.

Christine has a rubber bracelet with the colors blue, white and red.

Genesis has a stretchy bracelet with a wooden fish with the name Jesus on it.

Rianna wears sparkly hoops!

Anna uses little light blue clear star earrings.

Nicole has little polka dot bows that match the uniform.

Christmas Pageant

By Nicole Ojugbana

MCA is holding a Christmas pageant on December 20th! The students at MCA will be performing Christmas Carols in the gym. The 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th graders have been working extremely hard singing carols, and the pageant is drawing very near. We will be performing songs that most people know, like “The Twelve Days of Christmas” and “Joy to the World”. The pageant has been going pretty well so far, and we, the students, have pageant rehearsal on Tuesdays. The rehearsal is from 3:45-5:00pm, and we have the rehearsal instead of the usual activities we have (until we actually do the pageant). The rehearsal usually takes place in the chapel on the 2nd floor, but on Tuesday, December 6th, we had rehearsal in the gym, as a rehearsal place for what the actual Christmas Pageant day would be like. After we perform the actual Christmas Pageant, then we go into Christmas vacation! We will be performing in front of our friends and family, so everyone has been working hard to do well. Some people have solo parts that they will sing, so for example Hunessa and Amauna in the 5th grade have a solo part that they will perform in one of the carols we will be singing. Overall, we will be singing the carols together as a whole school. My opinion about the pageant is positive. I thought that it was going to be an actual pageant, with a catwalk and everything, and I was really nervous because I absolutely hate modeling. But then, Ms. Ricketts told us that it was actually just us singing Christmas carols! I was VERY relived. The pageant will officially be held in the MCA gym on 12.20. On Wednesday, December 14th, we rehearsed in the gym. The people who were playing parts, like Mary, Joseph and the angels, were rehearsing for the whole last period while we did our little part. They had to rehearse the part where they walk in to start the whole pageant. The cast is made up mostly of 6th graders, but there are a few 7th and 8th graders also part of the cast.

This year the 6th graders have been working super hard on their project called “Step Into Art”. Step Into Art is for the students of Mother Caroline Academy to show their art work and just have fun with it. The thing is the only students that do it are the 6th graders. The 7th and 8th grades did it when they were in the 6th grade.

The head of Step Into Art is Ms. Bartels and she is the art teacher. I have heard that it is super fun so because I am in the 5th grade I can’t wait until next year. Ms.Bartels, my art teacher, said that she has fun working with the 6th graders. Also I have seen their art work on the art room tables, and it is amazing. Now we have the 7th graders’ art work out in our hall way. “It makes the halls look even better than yesterday,” I say. Every time when I pass by the art room and the 6th grade are in there, all I see are smiles, even the teacher.

Here is a word from my art teacher. She says that she loves the Step Into Art program because it combines art and writing which are her two favorite things. How it works is that the 6th graders go on a field trip to the Sackler Museum at Harvard University in September to look at paintings. Then they write stories and poems about what they saw at the museums. Then they work on painting their own self-portraits in art class which are displayed in an exhibit at Harvard University on Saturday, January 7. It is free to go and you’ll get to see beautiful art work. I can not wait until I go there. The Step Into Art program sounds amazing.

Christmas better well tell you how to make your Christmas better. So what my point is
to tell you how to make Christmas cookies I know it sounds a bit boring but I guarantee
you all that “hard and boring work” is going to make delicious cookies that as soon as the
tray is put on the table there is not even a crumb. Getting to the point I am going to tell
you how to make a kind of cookies so start writing this down. The
cookie I am going to tell you about is a cookie called Christmas fudge. Before we start
baking we should get the ingredients need which are…

1 cup of sugar
½ cup of butter
½ cup heavy cream
1/8 tsp of salt
2 cups of powdered sugar
1 tsp vanilla
½ cup red candied cherries, chopped
½ cup green candied cherries, chopped

YAY… now that we have everything prepared we are ready to start making. now the

first thing you do is spray 8x8 baking dish plus don’t forget the cooking spray also a

large sauce pan, get the sugar, the cream and the butter, cream and salt and put to boil in

medium heat plus frequently stirring. Let it boil for 5 min.still stirring constantly. remove

from the heat when min are up and slowly add the powdered sugar and vanilla start

stirring until really creamy (smooth)and well combined start getting the cherries and stir

until well distributed. Then get a spoon into the baking dish and let it cool off for about

an hour or until its firm then after doing all that put the desert in an airtight container

Now that you have it ready you can eat it mmm doesn’t it taste good okay ill let you eat
